REGULAR
Ethiopia Harrar Messela (organic)
Harrar is where coffee was first discovered and then later commercialized. At lighter and medium roasts, you will first notice the syrupy taste of dark berries, especially black and blue ones. Soft notes of clove and cardamom give it a smoky character, as do hints of brown sugar. The aroma is distinctively floral. The body thickens up noticeably at darker roast levels, as do chocolate tones, which remain for a pleasantly long time in the finish. There is low acidity in both lighter and darker roasts, but it still makes for an excellent espresso. If used in milk-based espressos, use as little as comfortable to accentuate Messela’s rich character.

Ethiopia Sidama (organic)
Light roasts reflect sugar browning, berry pies, honey, and hints of lime, while darker roasts bring out caramel and red grape juice. The deep acidity of this coffee mellows out at longer roasts, bringing out grape and blackberry notes that are not as evident at lighter roasts. This coffee finishes beautifully with a flavor of black tea and honey that lingers long in the aftertaste. Makes an outstanding espresso!

Ethiopia Yirga Cheffe (organic)
This coffee is not only sweet and floral but has a more significant chocolate character than most other Yirga Cheffes. Light roasts offer orange essence, lemon and floral jasmine notes. It is creamy in both body and mouthfeel, which delightfully nuances the acidity. Darker roasts have more sugar flavors but still retain the floral notes of lighter ones. Full City and Full City+ make excellent espresso-based drinks.

Guatemala Huehuetenango
Full City roasts show chocolate tones, burned sugar and a sweet prune smell. There are equally high levels of sweetness and acidity in the City+/Full City range, with complex fruit and spice notes emerging as the cup cools in temperature. At warmer temps, cacao is evident. City roasts show hints of apple and white grape, while FC roasts develop darker fruit notes, plum and concord grape, sweet and juicy. Body is full throughout! This makes a great brewed coffee in the City to Full City roast ranges, and is best appreciated up to medium (FC/FC+) roast levels.

<HR><center>Rwanda Kivu Kibuye</center>

Rwanda Kivu Kibuye
Kibuye is a super star Rwanda with all the top notes you hope for in a highlight coffee. City+ roasts are complex, showing a sweetness that is like raw cane juice. As the cup cools, mellow citrus notes fill out the profile, lemon oil, orange tea, all reminiscent of lemon-mandarin rice candies. Cinnamon stick, clove, and all-spice notes arise in both light and more developed roasts, and you can expect mouth-cleansing acidity throughout. Full City brings chocolate roast tones to the profile. The middle roast ranges make for a standout pour-over brew, and Full City produces one of the best African espressos of the year.

<HR><center>Sumatra Toba Batak</center>

Sumatra Toba Batak
The dry fragrance of this coffee has a strong raw honey sweetness in lighter roasts, as well as chocolate, aromatic wood and herbal notes. There's sweet sarsaparilla and root beer scents in the wet aroma, caramel and butterscotch, darker malty scents, and pungent spice. At light roasts the strong, rustic sweetness will remind you of chicory root, molasses and sarsaparilla, laced with clove and cinnamon. There is dark dried fruit, plum, and a bit of rindy grapefruit in the lighter roast brightness. The body is lighter than other Sumatras but still quite syrupy and substantial. Darker roasts produce a dark malty note, as well as caramelized sugars and cocoa with a rustic overlay. The long aftertaste has nice cinnamon-laced black tea notes and hints of aromatic cedar and cinnamon bark.

Makes an outstanding single-origin espresso!

Sumatra Lintong Pak
The dry fragrance has intense chocolate and caramel biscuit tones, with molasses, chocolate-coated raisin and dark berry. Sugar-browning notes like butterscotch, caramel and spice are present in the wet aroma, with some plum and blackberry fruits. The cup has a great rustic sweetness, with Concord grape notes, molasses, cinnamon stick, black tea, fresh tobacco, and strong mulling spice in the finish. Light roasts have a more malty roast taste, fading to chocolate with plum/prune fruit. Darker roast levels have dark malt syrup, and a thick slab of fruited/chocolate flavor. This coffee has a body that is nicely weighted like apple juice.

<HR><center>French Blend</center>

French Blend
A favorite blend designed to endure the rigors of dark roasting, and produce excellent pungent tastes, attractive bittersweet/carbony flavors, and great body. Body is so important to a darker roast, and a thin cup of burned water IS NOT what French Roast coffee is about! When correctly roasted you will taste some degree of bittersweet, overlayed on the carbony charcoal tones of the burned woody structure of the bean itself. You want something still voluminous, and something sharp that stings you a bit down the center of the tongue.

Also excellent as espresso for those who prefer less bite and deeper earthy flavors!

<HR><center>Espresso</center>

Espresso
As noted elsewhere on this site, there is no such thing as an espresso bean -- only espresso roast. Our suggestion: select the bean that looks most attractive to you and then ask us to roast it either City, Full City, or Full City+, depending on whether you like your espresso slightly lighter-fruitier or darker-richer. We'll take care of the rest.

Remember: you cannot order espresso here, but must do so using one of the bean options above.

DECAF
All HelioRoast decafs are water processed.

Ethiopia Ardi Decaf
Ethiopia Ardi comes from the Harrar region of Ethiopia immediately to the east of Addis Ababa, which is where coffee plants originated both biologically and then much later commercially. Like all Harrars, it is a shortberry coffee, and thus very fruity with low acidity. When roasted from Full City to Vienna, it has a very rich body, and increasing overtones of chocolate at the darker levels. Because eastern Ethiopia has such a low rainfall, it is dry processed, which means that the mucilage is removed by solar heat rather than by being soaked in water. This tends to mute some of the acidity and sweetness -- but there's plenty of both left to satisfy! Swiss Water Processing assures you of maximal bean character and minimal "decaf-y" taste and body.

<HR><center>Rwanda Wazungu Decaf</center>

Rwanda Wazungu Decaf
This coffee does not have the typical "decaf-y" aromatics. The dry fragrance from the ground coffee has candied walnut and prima raisins, with honey graham cracker at the lightest roast level. The wet grounds have aromatic suggestions of decaf at light levels, but it decreases as the roast level heads toward Full City. This coffee has a strong sweetness, dark brown cane sugar. The body is syrupy, and it pairs well with the tropical fruited notes in the cup, papaya, concord grape. The finish will remind you of Oolong tea. It works well for espresso as well, roasted to Full City level and rested at least 3 days post roast.

<HR><center>Burindi Muyinga Decaf</center>

Burindi Muyinga Decaf
The dry fragrance has a malty sweetness, burned sugar bittersweetness, and a dusting of dry spice. The wet aroma is very nice, almost syrupy sweetness of dark sugar. City+ roast has a pleasant bittersweet cocoa flavor reminiscent of cinnamon-spiced, Mexican dark chocolate. Full City+ is matched by an incredibly dense chocolate flavor, like 85% cacao bar with the bittering of ground cacao nibs, sweetness of dried currants, and flecks of cinnamon spice. Decaffeination can mute a coffee's complexity, but this coffee's original characteristics are well represented across the roast spectrum.

No Fear!
If you want to reduce the kick of our regular coffees, but not all the way, you'll love our house blend of half Sumatra Lintong and half Rwanda Wazungu SWP Decaf. The bold roast retains the fruity aroma and taste of its parents and accentuates the deep caramel sweet scent. As the cup cools it gets bolder, leaving a very pleasant and long after-taste. And we make sure that there is no detectable decaf aroma or taste.
